There are two main ways into the Emerald Triangle, and the main fare involves passing through Sonoma County via the 101. Most people driving through Sonoma County are well aware of the long history of wine and grape production in the region which extends to well before and even during the alcohol Prohibition of the 1920s. Few are aware that there are licensed cannabis farms in Sonoma County today, and even fewer are aware of the deep history of outdoor cannabis cultivation in Sonoma County.

Plants bred or shared in Sonoma County during the 1970s have gone on to have huge founder effects on the global cannabis genepool. Sonoma County used to have it all: communes where sinsemilla growing techniques were freely shared, and even an annual Sonoma Harvest Festival which has been cited by High Times Editor Steve Hagar as the direct inspiration for the first Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam in 1988. By the time the first Cannabis Cup had occurred, the Sonoma Harvest Festival had already celebrated its 10th year and in fact, some of the very same seed populations that had won in Sonoma would go on to win in Amsterdam - a clear testament to the far reaching impacts of not only the cannabis harvest itself, but the community gatherings inspired by it and most of all the market effects spread far and wide by the harvested plants themselves.

The DCC reports that in 2025, 8 licensed outdoor cultivators in Sonoma County harvested 489,460 wet pounds across 130,550 plants [1]. In 2025, Sonoma County grew ~7.8% less weight than the previous year, accounting for ~2.7% of the state’s total 2025 outdoor harvest compared to ~4.4% in 2024. The full term harvest showcased by our Sonoma County respondent only represents one unique microclimate of Sonoma’s many microregions, and we are honored to be able to add Sonoma County to this year’s harvest report.

According to NOAA [2], Sonoma County’s 2025 growing season was significantly cooler than in 2024 sans the July heatwave that was felt hardest in more southern counties. For harvest, September was cooler in 2025 while October was significantly warmer than the previous year. Additionally, the harvest months of September and October saw a reported ~2.7” of rain fall on average across Sonoma County, more than quintuple 2024’s amounts. Even without rain events, more of Sonoma County is under the fogline and heavy coastal influence than any other surveyed county in this report besides Santa Cruz County.

Harvest Information

2025 Final Planting Date: 6/1/2025

2025 Harvest Dates: 9/3/2025 - 10/21/2025
