2025 Humboldt County Cannabis Harvest Report

This is part 3/8 of the 2025 California Cannabis Harvest Report by Budist. Scroll to the bottom of this page for links to the other sections.

Humboldt County is undeniably the most famous county in California, if not the whole United States, for cannabis. What’s more, Humboldt has held this undisputed title for decades, situated as the crown jewel of the Emerald Triangle.

Humboldt’s reputation spread worldwide year after year after year due to a combination of unintentional advertisement via flashy headlines like the San Francisco Chronicle’s front pager in 1977, “How a Town Got High,” [1] or the New York Times’ 1979 banger, “Marijuana Crops Revive California Town [at Harvest],” [2] plus an undeniable and unsuppressable supply to back it up.

Others came to Humboldt County physically to participate in cannabis-fueled music events like Reggae on the River and many others over the years then spread the word to their peers once they returned home from Humboldt County. However the word spread, once the knowledge was combined with a first experience of consuming Humboldt sungrown or accessing its supply, the association and connection was set and ready to become part of history. A history that still continues strong til this day. One modern event that celebrates the annual cannabis harvest in Humboldt County is The Humboldt Showdown with a flower category, a concentrate category, and even a melt category.

The DCC reports that in 2025, ~458 licensed outdoor cultivators in Humboldt County harvested 3.38 million wet pounds across 1.92 million plants [3]. In 2025, Humboldt County grew ~14% less weight than the previous year, accounting for ~8.1% of the state’s total 2025 outdoor harvest as compared to ~23.6% in 2024. The full term harvests showcased by the farmers below are but a small fraction of Humboldt County’s total harvest and do not fully represent the range of growing regions and microclimates within the county, but we feel they are a beautiful and telling showing of the cannabis harvest across different corners of Humboldt County that the entire county can feel immense pride from.

According to NOAA data [4], the 2025 growing season was cooler and dryer than in 2024 - with the highest average temperatures arriving in August 2025 per usual as opposed to in July in 2024. Harvest weather took a different turn. In 2025, the harvest months of September and October saw a reported 6” of rain fall on average across Humboldt County, more than double 2024’s harvest-time rains.

Some farmers reported lower terpene test results this year versus last year with the same cultivars. Others reported 2-3% lower THC percentage numbers due to early harvest to avoid rain. One farmer noted that the wetness during harvest led to sporadic mold that could only be identified before packaging. During wet harvests like 2025, the quality control that farmers go through post-processing becomes even more important.

As our county with the most farm respondents, Humboldt offers us a geography to highlight the many different microclimates fed by this storied county. This year we have a great sampling of farms from all corners of Humboldt. As just one extreme example not currently found in other counties, Humboldt County is home to the largest concentration of licensed cannabis dry farmers within California if not the country and even the world.

Sunrise Mountain Farms

Farm Information

Website: https://sunrisemountainfarms.com/

Instagram: @sunrisemountainfarms

Latitude: ~40.900 N

Elevation: ~2,500’

Farm Region/Watershed: Brannan Creek Watershed, Willow Creek, Humboldt County CA

Certifications: Sun + Earth Certified, Equity Trade Certified, Wildlife Conscious

Head Cultivator: Lorelie Sandomeno

Cultivated: 8,500 sqft

Light dep: no

Geographic features: Elevation ranges between 2300’ - 2800’ with growing flats and terraced hillside beds

Orientation: Our east facing aspect offers early morning sunshine with full midday sun and autumnal diffused late afternoon light which keeps late day temperatures lower benefiting preservation of terpenoids.

Microclimate: Hot inland temperatures moderated by coastal humidity and a diurnal moisture cooling effect, since we are located 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Some days fog settles in the river valley below, evaporating by mid morning adding a touch of refreshing moisture to the hot dry air. Daily mid afternoon ocean breeze pushes hot air eastward, slightly cooling temperatures. Winter snow accumulates 1-3ft for periods of time, generally a few weeks per occasion.

Soil Composition: Native serpentine soil mixed with organic potting soil, including added amendments, composts and organic soil building inputs of 20 years. Plants drink natural spring water with naturally occurring minerals like calcium & magnesium.

Genetics Information

Total # of cultivars: 16

Genetics sources: In the 2025 growing season, we used all of our own in-house genetics.

Top Cultivars: Burmese Mimosa, Blueberry Muffin, Hot Berry, Strawberry G, Ashram Kush

Additional info: We look forward to R&D of well loved historical seed stock for rollout in the coming years.

Cultivation Practices

Plant inputs: The season starts by lab testing our soil so we can specifically target what inputs are needed for the growing season. We use minimal additions of amendments, compost & manure. Throughout the season, we harvest and make plant nutrients and foliars from on-farm adapted recipes,  making ferments and teas from wildcrafted and farm grown plants, fruits, herbs.

Pest management: On the farm we employ a multiprong approach to integrated pest management. We have a farm cat and dog who help deter and mitigate larger pests, we employ companion planting and bunker plants for hot spots. Monitoring is our first and most crucial tool followed closely by Korean Natural Farming ferment applications.   Jadam Herbal Solution (JHS) is a simple but important step in our natural pest management application plan. JHS is essentially a tea that is boiled or steeped for about an hour; the resulting liquid is the finished product. The tea is made from non toxic, edible, people safe plants that have their own pest deterrent properties such as Garlic, Hot peppers, or, in our case California Bay Laurel from the property.  New this year and gaining traction in regenerative circles, Jadam Microbial Pesticide (JMP) represents the most cutting edge advancements in natural farming related chemistry. JMP utilizes the combined power of a special coconut based "nonionic" organic soap and microbiology to fight off all unwanted garden visitors. This type of IPM is actively alive and working for us in the gardens even when we are not.

Planting tech: We use a culmination of cultivation techniques learned through decades of experience with combined knowledge from our team members. Included methods range from permaculture, Korean Natural Farming, Jadam, Soil Food Web philosophies. Bridging no-till, hugelkultur, cover cropping, composting, companion planting, wildlife enhancements, indigenous microbial inoculations, making on-farm plant nutrients; all of which influence the plants vitality and natural genetic expressions.

Philosophy: Sunrise Mountain Farms embodies the dream of creating potent medicine with the principles of land stewardship in balance and harmony with nature. As a legacy cannabis farm in the mountains of Humboldt County, we value healthy living by sustainably producing the highest quality craft cannabis.

Estate grown at an elevation of 2,500’ with lush, forested wilderness surrounding. Our regenerative and science based farming practices build a foundation of wellness from the ground up. We start with the soil. Feeding and growing a robust microbial network that encourages our plants to exude cannabinoids and terpene expressions reflective of our terroir and distinct growing style. Plants root into vital soil, drink pure mountain spring water, and experience the sunrise every morning. Our farm made nutrient recipes enhance the natural expression of  cannabinoids and terpenes of the cannabis plant. For the full potential of each plant to be realized, each one is thoughtfully and lovingly tended to. Our unique genetics are flavorful and bred for overall experience and entourage effect. We feel great knowing that regenerative farming contributes to a sustainable future for our planet.

As innovators striving for sustainability from seed to shelf, our products are offered in mostly glass, and PHA (corn based) home compostable / biodegradable packaging. Supporting social awareness and community involvement for the sustainability and survival of small producers and normalization of cannabis, we actively volunteer on community boards and with advocacy groups. Collaboratively work with researchers and biologists to further science and sustainability in our field. We feel so grateful to work with this ancient medicinal plant, sharing its abundance for optimal health and wellness of people and planet.

Harvest Information

2025 Final Planting Date: 6/21/2025

2025 Harvest Dates: 9/25/2025-11/7/2025

Earliest Cultivar: Blueberry Muffin

Latest Cultivar: Ashram Kush

Atypical conditions: The 2025 growing season had cooler than usual mid-summer months, and finished with higher rainfall than the several previous years.

Notable highlights/challenges: A highlight on our farm has been working with wildlife biologists at Cannabis for Conservation and CalPoly Humboldt for several years for the purpose of wildlife data collection and development of a Wildlife Certification Program for the purpose of conserving wildlife species. We were thrilled to discover that Sunrise Mountain Farm has a thriving population of the Western Bumblebee (Bombus occidentalis) which was thought to be extinct in the state of California and is a protected species under the California Endangered Species Act since 2019. Due to this discovery, biologists were able to secure additional grant funding to further study and protect this and other endangered native bee species on California cannabis farms. We are elated to have this clear validation of our regenerative farming practices having direct beneficial impacts on the environment & ecosystem.

We continue to be home to a professional weather station which was purchased for Sunrise Mountain Farm in 2019 for the purpose of collecting environmental climate data for cannabis appellations development. A challenge is that we do not currently have any researchers that are monitoring this data.

Takeaway: Sunrise Mountain has unique cultivars some of which have been pheno hunted and preserved for years, including Creme de Luna which has been cultivated yearly for about 15 years due to its remarkable physiological effects and cultivation attributes, and the Hot Berry bred approximately 11 years ago.

Sunrise Mountain has a history of growing cultivars for hash/rosin production, as well as alternative cannabinoid cultivar options. Due to California market conditions, we took a break from commercial production of these types of cultivars for a few years. As the market is maturing now, we are bringing back some of these types of cultivars.

Catch a Cloud Farms

Farm Information

Website: https://www.catchacloudfarms.com/

Instagram: @catchacloudfarms

Latitude: ~40.760 N

Elevation: ~3,000’

Farm Region/Watershed: Northern Humboldt County (Coastal)

Certifications: N/A

Head Cultivator: Carter Cox

Cultivated: 38,560 sqft

Light dep: no

Geographic features: We are located at 3,000' elevation, about 13 miles from the coast in Northern Humboldt.  We're situated on the first ridge top overlooking the Pacific Ocean, so we definitely have a powerful coastal influence on our farm, which in many ways protects, enhances & preserves the terpenes from overheating in the warmer summer months with cooling ocean breezes that gently flow over the canopy.  This coastal climate also encourages the plants to be hardy & build strength structurally so they can withstand the last few precious weeks of unpredictable fall weather leading into harvest.  As the fall and harvest approaches we often get high winds, rain, and colder weather, but the location and orientation of the gardens also help to protect the plants for an ideal finish, whether that be for cured flowers or fresh frozen.  We cultivate in native soil, using regenerative farming practices like low till, cover cropping, using only organic amendments and compost teas.

Genetics Information

Total # of cultivars: 23 different strains, along with many new genetics in our R&D canopy

Genetics sources: In 2025, we exclusively cultivated from our own nursery stock.  We have of course also sourced from other amazing breeders in past seasons, but in 2025, we pulled from our own nursery stock.

Top Cultivars: Doc Ray Genetic's Blue Skunk, Nectarine Jelly, OG Headband, and Forbidden Melonz were standouts. Honestly it's very hard to pick favorites because all the genetics bring something unique.

Cultivation Practices

Plant inputs: Compost teas, Organic amendments, and Beneficial Biologics.

Pest management: Alkalized water, Prevention through building healthy soil & plants, predator species, and, on occasion, neem-based oils.

Planting tech: We are 100% grown in native living soil that has been nurtured for over 10 years using cover cropping, low tillage, composting, and other biologically enhancing farming practices. While we don't prescribe to only one specific cultivation practice, we pull many regenerative techniques like KNF, hugelkulturing, and other sustainable farming practices that we have learned to incorporate into our SOP's and do at scale for our acre of canopy.

Philosophy: We try to be the best stewards of the land and support the surrounding ecosystems as best as we can.  So our farming practices, the way we nurture our plants, and run our business are all done with the intention of giving more than we are taking.  We farm the land that has also been our home since the early 1980's, so this philosophy is an everyday practice for us and truly, just a way of life.  We also believe that this philosophy and practice shows itself in the quality of products we produce.  When it's craft, it just hits different.

Harvest Information

2025 Final Planting Date: 6/30/2025

2025 Harvest Dates: 9/29/2025-11/15/2025

Earliest Cultivar: Forbidden Melonz (Forbidden Fruit x Watermelon Zkittlez), harvested late September

Latest Cultivar: Space Station (Super Sonic x GMO), mid November

Atypical conditions: 2025 was a wild year for weather in Northern Humboldt.  We had an unusually hot stretch of weather in June & July.  The plants were immediately put through their paces when put in the ground.  August & September were beautiful right up until 2 weeks before harvest, and then back-to-back storms hit with a vengeance towards the end of September, and we danced with Mother Nature all the way until mid-November.  The rain & wind played a huge factor in the cadence of how our harvest happened in 2025.  It's rare when you get to harvest full terms when you really want to, as opposed to when the weather demands you have to.  That is the challenge of farming on the North Coast, but for us, 2025 felt like you really needed to know what you were doing and be prepared to survive & thrive in those weather conditions.  The flower cured beautifully, and the rosin is stunning with some of the loudest terp profiles we've ever grown, so perhaps it was the extremes of the weather that pushed the plants to the next level.

Notable highlights/challenges: Every year, we say we are done chasing, and yet, every year, we keep fine-tuning a little more and a little more.  We said we were done building new infrastructure and investing money we don't really have into the farm, and yet, we keep evolving.  The truth of the matter is that we truly love what we do, so we will keep the momentum going as long as we can.

Takeaway: Every year or season, we have the benefit of lessons learned from the previous years.  So in that sense, 2025 was the best season yet. Having said that, 2024 fall weather was a once-in-every-10-year home run, and 2025 harvest was a grind but worth every bit of blood, sweat & tears!

Galactic Farms

Farm Information

Website: https://galactic-farms.com/

Instagram: @galactic_farms

Latitude: 40.460N

Elevation: 200’

Farm Region/Watershed: Avenue of the Giants, mainstream of the Eel River

Certifications: Sun + Earth

Head Cultivator: Indicus Riggs

Cultivated: 3,000 sqft

Light dep: yes

Geographic features: Our farm is in a small little hamlet called Stafford. The property is sidled right up along a great bend on the Eel River nestled between two large mountain ranges one along the northern horizon and another running along the southern horizon. This creates a funnel with wind and fresh air coming off the ocean 15 miles to the west and passing east through the valley in which the farm is situated. With the flow of fresh air the temperature is never too hot, nor too cold as the elevation is around 300 feet. It’s an amazing micro climate that not only creates ideal conditions for cannabis flower resin production and terpenes, but also allows our bees to produce multiple harvests of honey throughout the year. The cultivation site is upon an alluvial flat, with a deep sandy loam, which has a capacity to be dry farmed even in the driest and hottest summers. The land is also wooded with deciduous and evergreen, predominantly redwoods. This living forest creates a mat of mycelium which the cannabis plants can tap into with ease, accessing all of the benefits it provides and working within that ecosystem as a natural part of it.

Genetics Information

Total # of cultivars: 6

Genetics sources: I got most clone cultivars from Prime cuts nursery in Sonoma, and I do my own breeding with my own genetics.

Top Cultivars: Ogre Kush, Black Runtz, Space Cowboy, Old Man Rive

Cultivation Practices

Plant inputs: Bio stimulants such as kelp and fish aminos. I also create my own compost from the lands organic matter waste, chicken manure and goat manure from our farm.

Pest management: None. When you properly use biostimulants you increase a plant’s ability to uptake calcium which also increases brix content and thickens cellular walls, making it difficult for mold spores to inoculate the plant tissue and reducing a pests ability to recognize the plant as a viable food source.

Planting tech: I grow only in native soil and I cover crop during winter months tilling the green waste back into the soil in spring. We also use and make our own biostimulants and some JADAM solutions, specifically JADAM microbial solution (JMS). When you properly use biostimulants you increase a plant’s ability to uptake calcium which also increases brix content and thickens cellular walls, making it difficult for mold spores to inoculate the plant tissue and reducing a pests ability to recognize the plant as a viable food source. The JMS inoculates the garden with native microbes that increase plant vigor and acclimates the plant root system to their new home in native soils.

Philosophy: My philosophy is terroir. Closed loop systems for the most part and working within the natural ecosystem that exists around the garden. The practices of Agroforestry in many respects. I work with nature to produce what nature produces all around me, abundance.

Harvest Information

2025 Final Planting Date: 5/31/25

2025 Harvest Dates: 8/15/25-10/31/25

Earliest Cultivar: Black Runtz

Latest Cultivar: Old Man River

Atypical conditions: Well we had an aurora borealis for the very first time ever. We also get some morning fog from the Eel River. Otherwise we are always pretty moderate in temperatures with mild fluctuations even from night to day. I keep a weather and temp log and it has been warmer the last several years.

Notable highlights/challenges: My garden is surrounded by tall trees and as September progresses towards the end parts of my garden get shaded for a large part of the day.

Takeaway: It was an overall better year. I really think it was cool having an aurora borealis for the first time in living memory.

Cultivated: 20,000 sqft

Light dep: yes

Geographic features: The Whitethorn Valley is a narrow valley running Northwest-Southeast, located in the Mattole River headwaters, in the southern portion of the Lost Coast region. The geography is typified by very steep mountainous terrain and small fertile valleys surrounded by dense temperate rainforests. The King Range coastal mountains stand tall above the valley. These mountains rise from sea level to 4,000' of elevation and have a significant effect on the weather patterns in the Mattole watershed and surrounding areas. During the summer months, they prevent coastal fog from reaching the valley at night, while also forming a heat bowl that traps hot air during the day. These geographic features result in extreme diurnal temperature swings that are often 50 degrees different from daytime high to nighttime low throughout the growing season. The extreme temperature swings, and relatively short growing season favors earlier finishing cultivars that reach peak harvest by late September or early October. Additionally, such temperature swings increase the stress response in the plant, producing a more robust flavor profile, distinct coloration, and phenomenal trichome development. When these climatic influences are paired with outdoor regenerative organic farming in the native soil the resulting cannabis is truly something special.

Genetics Information

Total # of cultivars: 20

Genetics sources: Huckleberry Hill Farms, Biovortex, Purple City Genetics, Rising Moon Medicinals, Pacific Roots Nursery, Source Nursery, Highline Nursery, HendRx Nursery

Top Cultivars: Bangin' Oasis (Whitethorn Valley Farm), Purple Papaya (Pacific Roots Nursery), Riddlez (Huckleberry Hill Farms)

Cultivation Practices

Plant inputs: We rely heavily on soil biology to do the work of feeding our plants. By feeding the soil through compost teas, fermented plant extracts, and other wildcrafted inputs we encourage a robust and diverse soil ecosystem that delivers cannabis flower of exceptional quality.

Pest management: We actively encourage a diverse farm ecosystem that contains many non-cannabis crops that are great for beneficial insect populations that compete with or feed on pests. By using integrated pest management practices, crop rotation, and biology we strive to create a balanced farm system such that pest pressures are kept at bay.

Planting tech: No/Low till, native soil, cover crop, crop rotation, composting, fermented plant extracts, etc.

Philosophy: Guided chaos. Using observations and data to make informed decisions. Always seeking the lessons from our mistakes. Moving slowly to allow nature time to respond.

Harvest Information

2025 Final Planting Date: 7/1/2025

2025 Harvest Dates: 9/18/25-10/28/25

Earliest Cultivar: Riddlez

Latest Cultivar: Sour Peaches

Atypical conditions: We observed an overall drier, cooler, and shorter growing season than in 2024. Spring rains stopped early, and water scarcity was acute. Peak summer temps did not get as high or stay hot for as long. Additionally, it appeared as if the seasons were about a month ahead of schedule, with a shorter summer and early onset fall that resulted in smaller plants that flowered earlier than in 2024.

Notable highlights/challenges: The early end to spring rains resulted in drier soils and less water availability during the dry season. This water scarcity in combination with somewhat cooler temps and a shorter than normal growing season increased plant stress resulting in smaller plants that flowered early and produced less biomass overall than in 2024. This also had a positive result in more concentrated flavor development and richer trichome and terpene expression.

Takeaway: We have found that staying true to our roots and growing cultivars that thrive in this microclimate results in healthy plants, unique and premium product, and relatively minimal effort.

Latitude: ~40.020 N

Elevation: ~1850’

Farm Region/Watershed: Benbow

Certifications: DEM Pure

Head Cultivator: Craig Johnson

Cultivated: 9,900 sqft

Light dep: yes

Geographic features: Alpenglow Farms is located on a sunny ridge top that faces slightly East, so our plants wake up to the first light of the sun (the Alpenglow light). Being at 1850 feet above sea level and the confluence of two rivers (the South Fork Eel and the East Branch of SFE) allows two air exchanges a day and has us perched high above the fog. We get about 60 more sunny mornings than valley farms and much warmer and drier air. The air is filtered through the forest that surrounds our homestead, and the forest brings gifts of carbonous inputs and biodiversity with microbes and fungi. All irrigation is from our rain catchment pond.

Genetics Information

Total # of cultivars: 16

Genetics sources: Clones from others, Seeds from others, Proprietary seeds from own breeding, Purple City Genetics, Haze Valley Nursery, and Source Nursery

Top Cultivars: Guava Gift, Forbidden Blueprint, and Mule Fuel. Look for Josephine OG.

Rebel Grown

Farm Information

Latitude: ~40.000 N

Elevation: ~1,400’

Farm Region/Watershed: Palo Verde Southern Humboldt

Certifications: Sun + Earth (pending)

Head Cultivator: Howard Redding

Cultivated: 15,000 sqft

Light dep: no

Geographic features: South facing on South Face Lane. We have 3 creeks in our neighborhood, the Chamise, Tomlong, and Pipe Creek, that pull moisture from the Eel River that also wraps around the neighborhood. This allows us to have a nice dew point during the hottest parts of the summer, and is one of the reasons I believe the Palo Verde has the ultimate full sun micro climate for Humboldt. Go 5 to 10 miles further inland and it will be too hot. Our balance of coastal and inland climate is why we have such high terpenes and cannabinoids alike.

Genetics Information

Total # of cultivars: 16

Genetics sources: Trinity Sun Grown for clones, and ourselves.

Top Cultivars: Double OG Chem, Hill Rich, Rebel Sour, Double OG Sour.

Additional info: We grew some of our staples, and some new cuts. We also did small batch testing of a lot of varieties.

Cultivation Practices

Plant inputs: Diversified organics. Amended soil, compost tea, microbes and other bio inoculants.

Pest management: Organic IPM, heavy on microbes.

Planting tech: Raised bed and pots, cover cropping, lots of diverse native plant species.

Philosophy: What you take from the Earth you must give back. We believe the energy of a farm can be felt through the experience of its offerings. The intentions and work that’s gone into developing our genetics, as well as year-round stewardship of the land and the cultivation season creates herb that we believe is special.

Harvest Information

2025 Final Planting Date: 7/7/2025

2025 Harvest Dates: 9/28/2025-10/21/2025

Earliest Cultivar: Original 5Gs

Latest Cultivar: Rebel Sour

Atypical conditions: Two storms several days apart in October combined with lack of labor help for the harvest caused us to harvest a few things a little earlier than we would’ve liked. The feedback on quality from buyers has still been very good. R&D cannabinoid testing was high but some varieties are usually 2-3% higher.

Notable highlights/challenges: Biggest challenge is lack of resources to hire additional labor for big pushes like leafing and harvest.

Takeaway: We had a new farmer running things and scaled down a bit.
