2024 Mendocino County Cannabis Harvest Recap
Mendocino County is the southern tip of the Emerald Triangle and contains a vast array of climatic zones and types of weather thanks to a coastal influence. Bordered to the North by Humboldt County, to the East by Lake County, and to the south by Sonoma County, Mendocino County is smack dab in the middle of cannabis culture and is often well known as the easiest to access county of the Emerald Triangle.
Mendocino County’s established viticulture regions and proximity to the Bay has long made it one of the more accessible parts of the Emerald Triangle to Californian urbanites.
LIke Humboldt, the county is split by the infamous Highway 101. Unlike Humboldt, more of the land closer to the coastline is inhabited including the Anderson Vallyey. Between the cities of Leggett and Laytonville, travelers on the highway will often notice Area 101 - still occasionally home to cannabis culture events that go late into the night.
In Mendocino County, some harvest went much later than in Humboldt and Trinity counties, going into December - taking advantage of the “late frost.” All in all, Mendocino farmers were very happy with 2024 with Redwood Valley’s Tall Tree Society even calling it a “vintage year.”

Notes on climatic growing conditions: “We get extreme heat here, very little fog. We get a lot of sun, most of our gardens get the first sun of the day being south east facing high up on the mountain they get blasted with sun all day. In certain areas the sun goes down around 4-5 PM generally. Much of our flower is grown in soil that we have created through Hugelculture and combining native elements and native soil with imported soil, but over years and years of cover cropping and layering and layering some of those inground areas are the most happy. Some of our above ground beds were having a little bit of a harder time with the heat. We collect our own water from rain water and sometimes we use well water which can have a lot of bicarbonate so we have to constantly pH the water. At some point in the light dep season we do need to use shade cloth on some stuff for finishing because of the extreme heat, we end up covering some of those the last few weeks. We get a lot of wind here - we have to stabilize our plants really well. It doesn’t get super cold at night. Sometimes in the fall, we will get a little rain which we did early in September but no damage.”
