Ray K Pre-Roll by Weedwoodz

You don't have to have a massive web and social media presence to produce incredible cannabis. Remember that Zlurpee Rollz by Farmer's Reserve, which took home the Gold in the non-infused preroll category at the California State Fair Cannabis Awards?

Of course you do. I still think about that one (I gave it a 96!), even though it's virtually impossible to find it anywhere, digitally or otherwise.

I'm hoping today's review of this First Class Genetics + Weedwoodz collab, a "handcrafted hemp joint with 1 gram of indoor flower and 0.75gs of live hash rosin" will play out similarly and it'll be a top-scorer, as l'm also not finding that much info about either of these two.

Fortunately, there have been a (precious) few nuggets about FCG and WeedWoodz spread mainly across comments on Instagram, different cultivation-focused forums, and Reddit's r/trees. LA's Sensi Flora handled the manufacturing, packaging, and distro for this one but there isn't a ton available on them either, outside of their 25+ years in the space. One thing is clear: these are NOT inexperienced operators who lack traction or know-how.

WeedWoodz has snapped up 10x major awards over the years, including taking third at the 2022 Emerald Cup for their XOXO infused preroll and holding multiple Farmers Cup titles. WeedWoodz tends to clean up at Farmers Cup, with their Black Garlic taking second (behind Maven and ahead of Originials) and "Best Aroma" for the indoor flower category in 2023. Their solventless rosin did well, earning them a third at the 2024 show. And at last year's 710 Edition event, they took home the win for their infused prerolls, absolutely dominating the category with specific honors for Smokability, Flavor, Aroma, Appearance, and Effect. A full sweep of every single distinction they could have possibly won under that category. The problem is, the only products of theirs I'm finding for purchase are three, $80 triple-infused blunts at the Dr. Greenthumb store near LAX, with another $40 joint that may or may not be available over in Northridge.

I was able to find a little more on First Class Genetics ("@First_class_5.0" is their verified handle on

Instagram- yes, the logo of the smiling cartoon plane dropping clones from its bomb bay doors). What I found was primarily related to some drama over a Khalifa Kush bag seed and how it changed hands and names between Compound Genetics (both pre and post-Chris Lynch), Berner/Cookies, and FCG. FCG is the co-creator of Pavé, KM16, and Baby Yoda (stemming from collabs with Compound) and their First Class Kush (aka Khalifa Kush V1) and Ray K (aka Khalifa Kush V2) cultivars have generated real buzz. Out in Portland, Maine they're making waves, with Ray K available via Rugged Roots as an uninfused preroll. I found some First Class Kush rosin in New Mexico that I'd be eager to sample.

...Road trip to ABQ?

I'll be the first to admit that I hadn't heard of Ray K before today, which is NOT the same as "Ray K 41". This is an indica-dominant hybrid, a mysterious Khalifa Kush bag seed they selfed, while Ray K 41 is a more evenly balanced cross of White Cherries and Gelato 41. I have no doubts that this will be a highly-potent and flavorful smoke, especially with nearly a full gram of live hash rosin inside, 41% total cannabinoids, and 3%+ terpenes. I'm assuming it's dry sift mixed with their flower and not a snake of rosin badder ("hash hole" style), based on a YouTube video I found of someone ripping the guts out of another WeedWoodz roll.

I crack open the heavyweight black plastic tube and am met with a whiff of gassy diesel kush, immediately conjuring up memories of products l've had from Wiz's official Khalifa Kush brand. It does appear to be hand-rolled (not a cone but somewhere between a cigarette and 410 bore shotgun shell) and the wood tip truly does elevate the experience, including helping to highlight the creaminess of the kush. This feels like a preroll that heads who hate prerolls will appreciate.

After taking a dry hit, you start to detect a lot more nuance in this funk. Super glue, a little turpentine, lemon, mangos, mint...it smells like I'm building and painting Gundam models at my parent's kitchen table again. A leaky Glade Plug-in, in your kitchen.

Where this joint wins points with me is how slow-burning (over 30 mins), consistent, and smooth it is.

The effects are a little bit of mood elevation and a lotta bit of deep relaxation. This cannabis makes it feel like gravity has been increased, almost like you're starting at double the normal gravity level and it dwindles back down as the high fades away. Starts in the head and flows down the body slowly. Its just a really good kush with a decent oil ring and white ash. And for how little flavor there was to the actual smoke, you do get some unique notes in the after taste - my tongue seems like its been coated with chalk and my hands smell lightly of gasoline.

My only regret is that I do wish I had a bag of (Wiz's) Khalifa Kush to compare it against.

90 points. Would happily smoke one again, if I could ever find it. The high is frankly, a little boring to me but it’s also not what I typically reach for. I also didn't feel much at all after the 90 minute mark- and for context, ! recently gave a 92 to that Rockstar RVU infused preroll that had mhilie pleasantly stoned for a full 3+ hours. I prefer the Ray K to Traditional's Cotton Censored (88 pts) but they suffer from several of the same drawbacks.

I'm left feeling - as I'm sure you are as well- like I wish I knew a bit more, especially with regards to pricepoint (~$20 is the most l'd pay for one). Perhaps a future interview for the Budist blog?

Album Pairing: Goats Head Soup by The Rolling Stones

The label wanted another "Brown Sugar" but instead they got "Angie" as the lead single. Personally, I love "Angie" (and "Heartbreaker", "Winter", etc.) but I get the criticism, the Stones slipped a bit after 11 previous albums of knocking it out of the park. Its a strong album- but Brussels Affair (live 1973), a 2011 release that showcases a live show from the same year Goat's Head was released, is more fun.
