Inside the MJBowl: The Role of Standardized Tools
The inaugural MJBowl was created to elevate how cannabis is evaluated and understood. Spanning California and New York, the competition brought together professional critics, operators, and experienced enthusiasts to assess products across the modern cannabis landscape.
Judging took place across five core categories:
Flower
Pre-Rolls
Vapes
Concentrates
Edibles
For each category, Budist assembled dedicated judging panels in both states. California products were evaluated exclusively by California-based teams, and New York products by New York-based teams. Judges were assigned to a single category, allowing them to focus and assess their submissions while leveraging their deep expertise, calibrating and comparing their scores with fellow judges.
As the process expanded across categories, products, and geographies, one principle became essential: consistency.
Cannabis evaluation is highly sensitive to variables. Preparation, storage, temperature, and consumption method all influence aroma, flavor, texture, and overall experience. Without controls, even skilled judges risk evaluating the tools rather than the cannabis itself.
This challenge is not unique. Established craft categories rely on shared standards to reduce noise and reveal nuance. For the MJBowl, Budist applied that same discipline by standardizing the methodology, devices and accessories used throughout the judging process.
What follows is a closer look at the tools that made that framework possible.
PAX Flow: Precision Vapor for Flower Evaluation
Judges often evaluate flower through a combination of combustion and vaporization techniques. The PAX Flow served as the primary vaporization device for flower judging, selected for its ability to deliver a clean, terpene-forward experience without combustion.
How it was used
Flower samples were milled using a Flower Mill, packed at consistent density, and vaporized at controlled temperature settings. Judges evaluated aroma, flavor development, smoothness, and overall mouthfeel across multiple draws and sessions.
Why it matters
The Flow uses hybrid heating, combining conduction and convection, to warm flower evenly while preserving delicate terpenes and cannabinoids. This allowed judges to experience the fullest expression of each cultivar with minimal interference from uneven extraction.
In wine, serving temperature shapes perception. Too cold and aromatics are muted. Too warm and alcohol dominates. Professional tastings control temperature so the wine can express itself honestly. Cannabis behaves similarly. Controlled vaporization temperatures preserve the truest essence of the flower, enabling consistent assessments and comparisons.
Dr. Dabber Switch²: A Standard for Concentrate Judging
All concentrate entries were evaluated using the Dr. Dabber Switch², an induction-based e-rig selected for its speed, thermal stability, and precision. Judges may also supplement their judging with their own personal dabbing device or rig for broader comparisons.
How it was used
Concentrates were cold-loaded into quartz cups and evaluated using identical temperature profiles to ensure even volatilization while protecting fragile aromatic compounds.
Why it matters
Concentrate evaluation is especially sensitive to overheating and device variability. A single, calibrated platform allowed judges to focus on oil quality, texture, and terpene expression rather than compensating for differences in hardware.
Active Singular Battery: Consistency in Vape Cartridge Evaluation
In vape evaluation, hardware plays a defining role. For that reason, MJBowl judges standardized cartridge judging using the Active Singular battery.
How it was used
All 510 vape cartridges were evaluated using identical Active Singular batteries with controlled settings. Judges assessed flavor clarity, vapor density, draw resistance, and overall experience under uniform power conditions.
Why it matters
Founded in Humboldt County in 2008, Active works with more than 400 brands nationwide. The Singular battery features draw activation, magnetic pod connections, multiple vapor settings, and a gentle preheat function ideal for thicker oils. Using the same battery for initial assessment allowed for consistent evaluations across judges while also enabling judges to compare with their own personal vape batteries.
Chill Bong: Clean, Cold Combustion for Flavor-True Evaluation
For combustion rounds, flower judges used the Chill Bong to evaluate how cultivars performed when lit.
How it was used
Judges assessed flower through combustion in a consistent, controlled format and compared results alongside vaporization-based evaluations.
Why it matters
Made from stainless steel with double-wall vacuum insulation, Chill Bong keeps water ice-cold for hours. A ceramic interior liner preserves flavor purity and makes cleaning easy. The result is smooth combustion without muting terpene expression.
Flower Mill: The Foundation of Every Sample
Before any flower reached a vaporizer, bong, or rolling paper, it was prepared using a Flower Mill.
How it was used
Judges used the Flower Mill to prep every flower sample, ensuring consistent particle size across all consumption methods.
Why it matters
There is a difference between grinding and milling. Flower Mill’s toothless design gently breaks flower apart instead of shredding it, preserving trichomes and improving airflow.
In coffee, burr grinders are preferred over blade grinders because uniform particle size improves extraction and clarity. Milling flower serves the same purpose, helping judges experience the cannabis as it was grown rather than distorted by inconsistent preparation.
ROCA Papers: Neutral Rolling for Pre-Roll Evaluation
For rolled flower assessments, judges used ROCA rolling papers, selected for their purity and performance.
How they were used
ROCA papers were used to evaluate burn line, airflow, smoke density, and flavor clarity without introducing off-notes or uneven combustion. Consistent evaluation of flower rolled in joints enabled comparison to other combustion methods and with vaporization-based evaluations.
Why it matters
Made from ultra-refined organic hemp, ROCA papers feature a micro-patterned surface that regulates airflow and temperature for slow, even burns. Created by industrial designer Ram Solell, the paper was designed to stay out of the way of the flower.
Pop-Vac Jars: Preserving Aromatics and Supporting Blind Judging
Pop-Vac jars were incorporated into parts of the judging workflow to help preserve volatile compounds and support blind evaluation.
Why it matters
Limiting oxygen exposure helped maintain aromatic integrity between sessions and across locations, ensuring judges encountered samples in their best possible state. Judges often go back to their sample multiple times after the initial assessment and these jars helped to preserve the products throughout the process.
HempZoo: Professionalism Beyond the Table
HempZoo provided 100% organic hemp fabric used for judges’ shirts and totes throughout the evaluation process.
Why it matters

Standardization is the backbone of credibility. By controlling variables, from grind size to temperature to airflow, the MJBowl ensured products were judged on equal footing.
In professional wine competitions, judges use identical stemware so glass shape does not influence aroma or mouthfeel. Standardized cannabis devices serve the same purpose, ensuring differences in experience can be attributed to the product itself.
This approach improves fairness, sharpens judges’ ability to detect nuance, and builds trust in results.
