Budist Newsletter: The Power Of Community

Dear Friends,

If there’s one word that continues to shape the journey of cannabis, it’s community. And right now, it’s more important than ever.

I’ve been in the industry for seven years, and many in the Budist group have been part of it for decades. As we reflect together on where things stand, one thing feels clear: we’re facing one of the most complex and challenging moments in cannabis history. Between market pressures, shifting policy landscapes, and growing fragmentation across the cannabis and hemp sectors, it can feel like we’re all fighting different battles. But are we?

Years ago, much of this industry gathered at the same table. People from different backgrounds and philosophies worked toward the shared vision of legalization, even when they didn’t fully agree on the path forward. Today, we’re in a time of extremes: roots vs. suits, hemp vs. cannabis, craft vs. commodity. The fragmentation is costing us progress. Politicians take note when we’re divided. Regulators exploit the gaps. Consumers get confused. And momentum stalls.

At Budist, we believe the path forward is through collaboration, building bridges, and seeking common ground. This month’s newsletter highlights just a few of the ways we’re leaning into that commitment.

With Gratitude,
Jocelyn Sheltraw

Event Spotlight

Budist partnered with the Cannabis Chamber of Commerce and MJBiz for an evening of networking at The Artist Tree in West Hollywood. The event brought together a diverse group of cannabis industry stakeholders from across the region to connect, collaborate, and educate in a safe and welcoming environment that celebrates our shared interests.

Budist Jake Kuczeruk led a guided tasting of three standout strains from A Golden State, Coastal Sun Farm, and Maven Genetics, offering guests a more intentional way to engage with the plant and spark conversation across experience levels.

Organizations like the Cannabis Chamber of Commerce play a vital role in our industry, helping to bring together business leaders, policy makers, producers, and advocacy groups in a spirit of unification and progress. Join us at our upcoming events later this month - see details in our Upcoming Events section below!

Brand Spotlight

Khalifa Kush (owned by Wiz Khalifa) sits at a rare intersection in cannabis: mainstream recognition with connoisseur-level execution. Their latest cultivar release, Point Breeze, named after Wiz’s childhood neighborhood in Philadelphia, has generated strong buzz—and received consistently high ratings from the Budist community. It’s a strong example of how cultural roots and craft can come together in a way that resonates far beyond celebrity.

Budist flower reviewer Lucas Indrikovs recently scored Point Breeze 94 points, describing it as: “This is more than just a celebrity strain—it’s a love letter to Philly. The flavor is bold and nostalgic, with rich grape notes and a punchy diesel edge, and the high brings both energy and ease. You can feel the pride and authenticity in every jar.”

Khalifa Kush is showing what’s possible when community, culture, and quality come together.

In the News

Media coverage plays a powerful role in destigmatizing cannabis—and it moves the needle when journalists spotlight the thoughtful progress happening in our industry.

We’ve been grateful to see Budist’s mission reflected in recent coverage. Rachelle Gordon, editor of GreenState offered a behind-the-scenes look at our judging process for the California Cannabis Awards, while longtime industry journalist Lindsey Bartlett highlighted how apps like Budist are shifting the narrative in Rolling Stone.

We’re also excited to announce that Budist is serving as the official judging partner for the 710 Farmers Cup! We encourage all growers and makers to participate in this regional competition—either as a contestant or event sponsor! Visit the Farmers Cup website for more information.
